The Pennsylvania Catholic Conference reinstates the obligation to attend Mass directly on Sundays and Holy Days starting on Sunday, August 15. The obligation was temporarily exempted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Amid rising concerns about the number of cases and delta variants again, a meeting on behalf of the state’s Catholic bishop announced in a news release that the obligations do not apply to specific individuals. The exemptions are as follows:
— — Sick person, serious health risk
— — People in the household with people at risk
— — The person who acts as the primary caregiver of the person at risk
— — Those who have serious anxieties or concerns about being in a large group environment for COVID-19
— — Those who cannot attend the Mass directly.
The news release states that anyone who believes they may be infected with COVID-19 should stay home “as a charity.”
Masks are not currently mandated, but news releases require parishioners to consider broader interests in making decisions about the use of masks.
“Currently, masks are not required, but each parishioner uses masks and vaccinations, following the example of all Pennsylvania Bishops, Pope Francis, and Pope Benedict XVI vaccinated for all public interests. We strongly encourage you to make responsible decisions about this, “reads the news release.
