Spring Break 2022 in Houston – Explore Galveston History With These Immersive Tours
1/Galveston Historic Seaport: Home to the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa
Tall ship ELISSA is one of Galveston’s most popular attractions and an excellent choice for a family tour this Spring Break of 2022!
In 1978, the Galveston Historical Foundation purchased ELISSA, a square-rigged iron barque built in 1877, from a scrapyard in Piraeus Harbor, Greece, to begin restoration work. By 1982, GHF employees and volunteers had completed the restoration and transformed this uncommon, historic yacht into a sailor-friendly floating museum.
The Tall Ship of 1877 is still sailing today. The ELISSA is one of only three ships of her type still sailing in the globe, and she attracts over 40,000 tourists each year. She’s also the Official Tall Ship of Texas, a National Historic Landmark, and a symbol of the Gulf Coast’s early days as a seaport and lively shoreline. At the Galveston Historic Seaport, the 1877 ELISSA greets guests every day. This is a fun way to learn about Galveston’s maritime history.
