Phyllis Ann Mahoney Ganey passed away peacefully at home in Osterville, MA on September 17, 2022. She was 90 years old. Born in 1932 in Buffalo, NY, Phyllis was the only child of Vincent and Theresa Mahoney. She graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in 1950 and attended D’Youville University where she received her nursing degree and shortly thereafter married her husband, John Rick Ganey (JR). Phyllis looked back fondly on her time in Buffalo and always vowed to return, even in her final days.
Phyllis had an early nursing career before spending her time focused on raising her four children in Rochester, NY. After raising her family she returned to nursing and spent many years as a school nurse. She and John settled on Cape Cod in 1994 upon retirement where they spent many happy years as active participants in their community. They enjoyed sharing this special place by hosting their lifelong friends, children, and grandchildren in their warm welcoming home, always stocked with every visitor’s favorite foods. She had a keen artistic eye and found fulfillment and friendship in several creative pursuits including painting, sewing, and upholstery. Phyllis was a devout parishioner of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Centerville, MA. She served as a wedding coordinator, participated in the GIFT program, and celebrated numerous family weddings and baptisms at her home parish – a cherished way to share and experience her deep Catholic faith with family.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband John, also of Buffalo, NY; and is survived by her four children, Timothy (Elizabeth), Mary Elizabeth Burke (Michael), Michael (Patricia), and Kathleen Mott (Peter). Phyllis also leaves behind 13 adoring grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She will be remembered for her sharp wit, sense of humor, fierce loyalty, creative spirit, and of course her elegance, beauty, and flawless sense of style. Phyllis cared deeply for those closest to her and spent her lifetime nurturing the relationships she so dearly valued. Her grace and enduring love for others have left an indelible mark on the lives she touched and her family will cherish and carry forward the memories they made together.
