John Bishop will star in Doctor Who series 13 as the companion alongside star Jodie Whittaker. The comedian was recently announced as the Doctor’s pal on board the TARDIS following the departure of Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole. But both he and Mandip Gill, who plays Yaz, could leave the show soon. Both companions are expected to depart along with Jodie and showrunner Chris Chibnall, as Russell T Davies prepares to take the reigns once again, meaning John’s Doctor Who career could be over before it’s even begun.
When asked by the Radio Times if he would return to the show, John says he hasn’t got a clue.
He said this week: “I think the official line is you say you don’t know,’ he admitted, before going on to insist: ‘I genuinely don’t know.”
The Liverpudlian has made a name for himself as a hilarious comic, and has also appeared on big shows such as A League of Their Own.
John is known for his sharp sense of humour, but in 2014, the comedian showed his more candid and sensitive side as he opened up about his breakup with wife Melanie.
Speaking about the split, John told The Mirror: “There was no huge fight or revelation about someone else.
“We just grew apart. Maybe it had something to do with having three kids so quickly. For six years there was always someone in the house in nappies. Our marriage just faded.
“You realise that the person you wanted to spend your life with no longer wants to be with you, or you with them. Suddenly it felt like walking round the house with drawing pins in your shoes.”
John revealed that, one night, he shaved his head to see if Melanie would notice.
He continued: “I looked terrible. A cross between a right-wing thug and someone people run marathons for.”
Following the split, John spoke about how he struggled with the idea of Melanie one day meeting another man.
He said: “The realisation cut me in half. I couldn’t stop the tears from falling as I tried to get wellies on the lads.
“No man wants to cry in front of his sons but it’s even worse when you don’t know why you’re doing it.’”

However, John and Melanie eventually got back together.
She visited a comedy club to find John telling jokes about killing her and keeping her head in the fridge because he “knew I’d miss her”.
John said that while he spent almost his entire act digging into their marriage, she saw the funny side of it.
He added: “We met up after the show and she said seeing me up there reminded her of me as I used to be. When I was a good laugh.”
John and Melanie remain happily married after nearly 30 years, and they live on a farm in rural Cheshire surrounded by their many pets.
The comedian spoke to the Times recently about how he made his way into acting and his role in Doctor Who.

He said: “It’s funny, isn’t it? I think coming to it late meant I never learnt to have a persona. I didn’t learn to perform.
“I didn’t go to comedy clubs, and because I didn’t watch stand-ups I didn’t know how to create a persona to hide behind.
“Also, when I watch somebody I want to feel like I’ve watched them. I don’t want to feel I’ve watched their act.”
He also discussed his 2000 split from his wife, saying that the wife jokes have continued.
In his current act, he fantasises about what would happen if Melanie suddenly died: the life he would lead, and the Chinese restaurants he would treat himself to (she does not like Chinese food).
