A £4,000 grant will ensure a Bishop’s Stortford community choir continues to hit the right note.
Cllr Calvin Horner, the Hertfordshire county councillor for the Bishop’s Stortford East division, dipped into his £10,000 locality budget to provide sound equipment for the Herts and Soul Choir.
The choir is a not-for-profit organisation which has raised over £52,000 for charities at its events. It has tight margins to cover the costs of its venue hire, musical directors, extra musicians and marketing.
At a recent sell-out performance at South Mill Arts, the choir managed to break even with only £8 to spare!
Previously, it borrowed sound and recording equipment from Herts and Essex High School – the grant will ensure it can plan concerts with confidence.
Cllr Horner, a Liberal Democrat, said: “I’ve been fortunate to attend a number of excellent performances by Herts and Soul Choir and am delighted to be able to support them to purchase their own sound equipment. Having this equipment will help them to make an even greater contribution to the cultural life of Bishop’s Stortford.”
Each of Herts County Council’s 78 members has a £10,000 locality budget to give out in the form of grants for projects that improve health and wellbeing; protect and improve the environment; support sustainable and responsible growth; or provide services that are accessible for all. In November, grants totalling £18,762 were awarded.
