CHRISTMAS carol concerts are being held throughout December in Brisbane archdiocese parishes – here’s where you can find them.
St Stephen’s Cathedral Annual Carols
Sunday, December 18, 5pm
St Stephen’s Cathedral
249 Elizabeth St, Brisbane City
Cathedral music director Christopher Trikilis said there’s something powerful and moving for the community to come together and sing these once-a-year melodies with their traditional words.
“The Feast of Christ, or Christ-Mass, is about the wonder and joy of the birth of a baby in a time of uncertainty, but that the baby is our God who became one of us and shares our challenges and journey.
“Our carols with their rich prose so beautifully capture just what that means.
“Interestingly, carols used to be sung for all the seasons and feasts throughout the year, but in recent years are just focused on Advent and Christmas.”

“Occasionally if we have a young group they might sing in English, and we welcome that too.
“We welcome everyone at Christmas.”
He said the community were hoping to get everyone together after the reduction in pandemic restrictions.

“There is true beauty in this magnificent coming together with a welcoming family of Carolers,” she said.
“I love Christmas carols because everyone can come, sing along and enjoy an atmosphere of fun, friendship and celebration of the holiest time of the year.
“Music uplifts the soul and brings joy to everyone at every age.”
Burleigh Heads parish Christmas Carols
Friday, December 16, 7pm
Mary Mother of Mercy Church
237 Burleigh Connection Rd, Burleigh Waters
Burleigh Heads priest Fr Jack Ho said the carols were an opportunity for the many different communities of the parish to come together in the one event to listen and meditate on the story of Christmas.
He said it was also a chance to respond to the story with the carols, which “sing of the wondrous story of God’s love for us”.
“It is a time of outreach to the families and friends of our parishioners who may not frequent Sunday Masses but would find this event a way of connecting with their faith and hope,” he said.
“After the time of meditation and songs, we gather as a community to celebrate with each other with food and drinks – a wonderful time of bringing together the vast parish.”
St Brigid’s Christmas Carols
Sunday, December 18, 7pm
St Brigid’s Church
78 Musgrave Rd, Red Hill
Organiser Roland Bartkowiak has been singing carols since he was 10 years old in the Adelaide cathedral choir.
He said he loved to see people get together and celebrate the essence of Christianity.
“The music has a very festive, rousing character,” he said.
“We’re trying to open the doors of the church and invite in the greater community, we’re trying to outreach to people who rarely go to church and have a joyous experience, and hopefully help them to the door of the church.”
