In a heartfelt message at the inauguration of the Jubilee Year in the Holy Land 29 December at the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa emphasised that the indulgence granted during the Holy Year is not a transaction, but a spiritual opportunity to seek forgiveness and reflect on personal transformation.

“It is a privilege from God,” he said, stressing that true indulgence comes through conversion and a change of heart.

The cardinal also said the Virgin Mary’s intercession marks this moment as a new beginning for individuals and their families.

Pilgrims visiting key sites in the Holy Land can receive indulgences, such as at the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre or the Basilica of the Annunciation.

Participants must also engage in spiritual practices such as Mass, the rosary or confession.

Despite the ongoing conflict in the region, many local Christians and pilgrims gathered to pray for peace and healing.

Cardinal Pizzaballa acknowledged the challenges of finding hope amid war and violence but reminded everyone that hope is foundational to faith.

He called for patience and trust in God’s plan, urging the faithful to take action to build solidarity and love despite hardships surrounding them.
