STRESS REDUCTION: The Galway Public Library, 2112 East St. in Galway, will host the program Stress Reduction: Finding Freedom from Anxiety, Worry and Fear on April 6th at 7:00. Participants will explore ways to identify and work with patterns of worry, fear, overthinking, avoidance, anxiety and more. Led by licensed psychotherapist Lisa Temoshok, this hour-long monthly gathering will focus on simple, creative, evidence-based tools and practices to apply to daily life. HISTORY PROGRAM: “The Deepest Devotion” Wednesday, April 6, 7pm On Zoom. Timed perfectly to celebrate the 200th birthday of the beloved general and president Ulysses Grant, Episode 19 of the popular virtual speaker series Experts Next Door will feature public historian and re-enactor Ben Kemp of the Ulysses S. Grant Cottage National Historic Landmark (Wilton, NY). Mr. Kemp will embody Frederick Grant, the eldest son of the Civil War victor and controversial two-term president Ulysses Grant. President Grant spent his final months of life at a cottage on Mt. McGregor in the Adirondack foothills of northern Saratoga County. Fred devoted himself to helping his father write his memoirs, and thus had a unique perspective on both the flesh-and-blood person and historical figure. Through intimate stories, Fred will show a different side to his famous father while illustrating the intense devotion his father had for his nation and his family. Mr. Kemp was born and raised in the Saratoga region of New York State. He is a living historian, speaker, and researcher who has been featured on C-Span, PBS, and the History Channel documentary Grant (2020). Mr. Kemp has been a staff member with The Friends of U.S. Grant Cottage since 2014. This event is free and open to the public. BALLSTON AREA SENIORS: Ballston Area Seniors will be meeting at the Milton Community Center, 310 Northline Rd., Ballston Spa, NY 12020, every Thursday at 10 a.m. to play cards, use the pool and craft rooms, or just socialize. Lunch is at noon. We are back to pot luck lunches. Bring a dish to be shared or bring your own lunch. We will have pizza every third Thursday of the month. The kitchen will be open for coffee and hot water for tea will be available. More information on weekly activities will be given out at meeting and in weekly newspapers.
UKRAINIAN EGG DECORATING: The Galway Public Library, 2112 East St., Galway, will host a Ukrainian Egg Decorating program on April 7th, from 6:00 to 9:00. Local artist Sallie Will will teach the free class. Donations will be accepted for the United Methodist Church’s Ukrainian Aid fund. Participants should bring two raw, washed white eggs, blown out and dipped in a vinegar/water solution prior to class if possible. The dyes are permanent, so old clothes are recommended. TRACTOR SAFETY: The Capital District 4-H would like to welcome all area youth who are 14 years and older, to participate in the 2022 Capital District 4-H/HOSTA Tractor Safety Program. This program is a great opportunity for youth who currently work on farms or around machinery, those who will be seeking employment on a farm, or anyone who would just like to learn more about farm and machinery safety. Participants will gain hands-on experience with a variety of equipment including tractors and implements, skid steers, ATVs and chainsaws. They will also visit a variety of agribusinesses, and receive HOSTA certification upon successful completion of the program. THE RED SAND PROJECT: The Salvation Army of Saratoga Springs, located at 27 Woodlawn Ave, is hosting an awareness event called the Red Sand Project to raise awareness around the issue of human trafficking and those being exploited for sex or labor purposes for someone else’s profit. The event will take place on April 8, 2022 at 10:30 am, featuring The Salvation Army’s Fight for Freedom Program. The Red Sand Project was initiated in 2014 when artist Molly Gochman recognized the need for awareness and for solutions to address trafficking. Molly created the Red Sand Project using each granule of sand as a representation for all the victims that have fallen through the cracks. Currently, The International Labor Organization estimates 40.3 million people are in modern slavery affecting communities throughout the world. This awareness event will last about an hour, featuring the Fight for Freedom Action Plan, Survivor Video, and Red Sand Pouring. Everyone is welcome to attend! YELLOW RIBBON DAY: Yellow Ribbon Day ceremonies featuring a keynote speaker from the Division of Military and Naval Affairs are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 9 at the Veterans Memorial, 162 Route 236 in Halfmoon. Yellow Ribbon Day is held annually to honor America’s military personnel. In conjunction with this event, Blue Star Mothers are collecting items for Freedom Boxes that will be sent to currently deployed troops. This collaborative effort has been increasingly successful over its 9-year history and expects to draw over 1,000 attendees. FURTHER ALONG SURVIVORS OF SUICIDE: The “Further Along Survivors of Suicide” Monthly Support Group meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be Tuesday, April 12th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Newtonville Methodist Church, corner of Maxwell Road and Route 9 in Loudonville, New York. MOONLIGHT HIKES: Are you interested in traversing the trails of Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park at night? View nature in a new light, or lack thereof, as we walk the trails under the full moon. An unforgettable experience for all ages! The group will cover approximately 1.5 miles of trail. In the month of April, the hikes are scheduled for Friday April 15th and Saturday April 16th, both beginning promptly at 8:00pm. This is a free program guided by an environmental educator. Scheduled for one Saturday evening a month, this new program will focus on chatting around the campfire! Each chat will involve discussions of local animal species and what is being done to support these populations. In addition to the discussion, participants will enjoy hanging out around the fire for cocoa, s’mores, and cookies! SPRING CRAFT FAIR: The Ladies Auxiliary of the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Club is holding a wonderful Spring Craft Fair on Saturday, April 16th from 10-4 pm at the Lodge on Elks Lane off Maple Avenue in Saratoga. PLAY READING: The Shuster Series of play readings is once again being presented by Home Made Theater. Join in for a “round table” play reading as participants dissect and discuss some of theater’s great literature as a group. Roles are assigned so all who attend get plenty of “performance” time. Audience members (non-readers) also welcome. The first play in the series is scheduled for Saturday, January 22nd from 10:15-1:15. Participants will be reading Our Country’s Good by Timberlake Wertenbecker. Based on true events, Our Country’s Good is set in Sydney, Australia in the early days of the settlement of Australia as a penal Colony. The play is about another play, a comedy called The Recruiting Officer, being performed using convicts as the actors, and directed by a very earnest young officer. The Shuster Series play readings will be held at the Ballston Spa Public Library at 21 Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa. Other dates in this season are February 19th, March 19th, April 16th, and May 21st. All readings will be from 10:15am -1:15pm. Participation is free, though there is a suggested donation of $5 to cover the cost of printing. MOONLIGHT HIKES: Are you interested in traversing the trails of Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park at night? View nature in a new light, or lack thereof, as we walk the trails under the full moon. An unforgettable experience for all ages! The group will cover approximately 1.5 miles of trail. In the month of April, the hikes are scheduled for Friday April 15th and Saturday April 16th, both beginning promptly at 8:00pm. This is a free program guided by an environmental educator. ENVIRONMENTAL TALK: Plastic Fantastic? A Look at a Growing Environmental Problem – April 20, 7 pm on Zoom. Plastic – miracle molecule or environmental scourge? Plastics transformed transportation and electronics, revolutionized medicine, and saves lives daily. But plastics have a dark side: they leach toxic chemicals, litter our landscapes, and imperil marine life. Our growing problem with plastic pollution is causing a host of negative human health and environmental impacts. Are there solutions? Anne Ernst is a senior lecturer in the Environmental Studies and Sciences Program at Skidmore College. She teaches both a science course and first-year seminar on plastics, as well as several introductory ESS courses. Prior to Skidmore, she worked as a research biologist at the US Geological Survey. This program is intended for adult audiences. Statistics reveal that farming and operating equipment is hazardous and dangerous work. You can help reduce your risk of a farming accident by attending this informative session. WING FEST: After canceling last year’s event due to the ongoing pandemic, the Glens Falls Collaborative returns to hosting its annual Wing Fest event on Saturday, April 30, 2022, from noon to 3 p.m. in Downtown Glens Falls. The event is a competition between restaurants for the best wings. Tasting is from noon to 3 p.m. and an awards ceremony at the bandstand in City Park at 3:30 p.m. will close out the event, with multiple categories of winners. SARATOGA HORSE SYMPOSIUM: CCE Equine is excited to host our Saratoga Horse Symposium on May 14th at the 4-H Training Center in Ballston Spa. This exciting educational event is a celebration of the horse for new, aspiring, and experienced horse owners and professionals. WALK-N-ROLL FOR SPINA BIFIDA: The 2022 Walk-N-Roll is a family-friendly one-mile walk that raises critical funds, increases awareness of Spina Bifida, and celebrates the accomplishments of the nearly 200,000 Americans living with Spina Bifida. TEAM BILLY RIDE & WALK FOR RESEARCH: The 18th annual Team Billy Ride and Walk for Research will take place on Sunday, May 15 at the Farmers’ Market at High Rock Park in downtown Saratoga Springs. Three rides of 50, 25 and 10 miles will begin at 8:30 a.m., with a three mile walk through the historic district starting at 9:00 a.m. The rides follow some of the most beautiful sections of Saratoga County, with the 50-mile bike ride through the Saratoga National Historic Park. This local event and ongoing donations have made possible over $2,700,000 in research grants for brain tumor research. Scheduled for one Saturday evening a month, this new program will focus on chatting around the campfire! PLAY READING: The Shuster Series of play readings is once again being presented by Home Made Theater. Join in for a “round table” play reading as participants dissect and discuss some of theater’s great literature as a group. Roles are assigned so all who attend get plenty of “performance” time. Audience members (non-readers) also welcome. The first play in the series is scheduled for Saturday, January 22nd from 10:15-1:15. Participants will be reading Our Country’s Good by Timberlake Wertenbecker. Based on true events, Our Country’s Good is set in Sydney, Australia in the early days of the settlement of Australia as a penal Colony. The play is about another play, a comedy called The Recruiting Officer, being performed using convicts as the actors, and directed by a very earnest young officer. The Shuster Series play readings will be held at the Ballston Spa Public Library at 21 Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa. Other dates in this season are February 19th, March 19th, April 16th, and May 21st. All readings will be from 10:15am -1:15pm. Participation is free, though there is a suggested donation of $5 to cover the cost of printing. INTERNATIONAL CUISINE DINNER: The World Awareness Children’s Museum is excited to announce their 32nd Annual International Cuisine Dinner and Auction, taking place at the Six Flags Great Escape Lodge & Waterpark in Queensbury, NY, on Sunday, May 22 at 5pm. SHOWMANSHIP CLINIC: The Saratoga County 4-H will be hosting a Showmanship Clinic on Saturday, June. The clinic costs $15 for Saratoga County 4-H members and $20 for Non 4-H members. Other regional 4-H members are welcome to join as well, for the same cost of $15. The Showmanship Clinic Check in will begin at 9:30am at the 4-H Training Center, with rotations starting at 10:00am and conclude at 1:30pm. The clinic will highlight 5 types of animal showmanship including: dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, goat, and horse. A professional showman from each species will demonstrate the proper technique and handling skills of that animal. They will guide 4-H’ers through the ring and show them proper etiquette. This will prepare showman for county, regional, and state level fair showmanship competitions. The clinic is also an introduction to the Master showmanship competition; which portrays the Grand Champion showman from each large animal livestock show (Horse, Sheep, Goat, Dairy Cattle, Beef Cattle) at the Saratoga County Fair to determine the overall “Master Showman.” Showmanship is the skill and ability of the showman. Showmanship is the technique of presenting an animal in front of a judge. The showman must keep eye contact with the judge and answer knowledge-based questions on the animal. The 4-H’ers will learn vital life skills of team work and trust. It is important for the youth to attend a showmanship clinic before exhibiting an animal at a fair. TOYS IN ACTION: The first large scale toy photography event that brings together a love of collectables, toys and photography will be held from 10 am – 7 pm on Saturday, June 18 at the Saratoga Springs City Center on Broadway in Saratoga Springs. Special convention guests include creative photographers, animators, and illustrators whose work has included projects for Disney and Star Wars, Hasbro, Marvel, Mattel and more. The day-long event features how-to panels, exhibitors, autograph-and-photo sessions, and a bevy of vendors offering attendees the opportunity to expand their equipment and collections. Event guests include Jared Middleton, Isaiah Takahashi, Jason Yang, Jax Navarro, Mitchel Wu and Richee Chang.
