Bishop’s College stops Central Leeward from repeating the double

The Bishop’s College Kingstown played spoiler last Sunday December 11, in the Central Leeward Secondary School’s attempt to repeat the feat as junior and senior double champions in the finals of the 2022 St. Vincent and the Grenadines Inter-Secondary Schools Football tournament, played at the Victoria Park.

In the Junior Division finals, two first-half goals from Bishop’s College Kingstown’s Joenaldo Payne sent shock waves through the ranks of the Central Leeward Secondary School supporters. Both goals were from set pieces, which left the Central Leeward Secondary goal-keeper bemused.

Although Delanzo Dickson pulled one back for Central Leeward, the city boys held on to win 2-1 and be crowned Junior Division Champions.

Joenaldo Payne was judged MVP of the Finals, while Ozari Doyle, also of Bishop’s College Kingstown was judged to be the best defender. The best goalkeeper was Bishop’s College’s Ethan Davis, and Delanzo Dickson was the best mid-fielder. N’jay Hooper of the Petit Bordel Secondary School with 9 goals,won the award for most goals scored.

In the Senior Division, Central Leeward Secondary successfully defended their title, albeit through a penalty shoot-out, against the Petit Bordel Secondary.

Lerence Benjamin opened the scoring for Central Leeward Warriors before Emroy Edwards scored the equalizer. The Warriors scored all 5 of their penalties to Petit Bordel’s 4, to lift the 2022 Secondary Schools Senior Division Champions trophy, for a second consecutive tournament.

Lerence Benjamin won the Best Defender award.The MVP of the finals award went to Emroy Edwards being adjudged the Best Mid-Fielder. Central Leeward’s Devon Morgan was adjudged the best goal-keeper in the tournament, and the most goals award went to Mitchron John of the Georgetown Secondary School who scored 11 goals.

The first game of the afternoon was the finals of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Inter-Primary Schools competition which pit the Sion Hill Government School against the Paget Farm Government School.

It was a highly competitive and action packed game in which Gideon Bess of Paget Farm scored the lone goal just seconds before the final whistle, giving the team from Bequia their first ever title.

Gideon Bess won the award for being the best mid-fielder and he was also named the MVP of the Finals. His goalkeeper, Chrisroy Stowe won the award as the best goalkeeper.

Sion Hill’s Carlson Yorke got the best defender award; and Paget Farm’s talisman, K-Jay Ollivierre won the award for scoring the tournament’s most goals, a whopping 33.

The third place in the Inter-Primary Schools tournament was won by the C.W. Prescod Primary, the third place in the Secondary Schools Junior Division was won by the Petit Bordel Secondary, and St. Martin’s Secondary won the third place in the Secondary Schools’ Senior Division.
