In the 11th hour, Bishop Diego’s undefeated football team found an opponent to fill its open date this weekend. The Cardinals (3-0) will play Liberty of Bakersfield on Saturday at 7 p.m. at La Playa Stadium.
Liberty, a Central Section Division 1 program, became available when its Friday game at Chaminade in West Hills was canceled Thursday due to a positive COVID-19 test result in the Chaminade program.
Bishop Diego had been looking for an opponent to fill its Week 4 bye date since its Week Zero (Aug. 20) game against Righetti was called off due to a COVID-19 issue at Righetti.
Liberty will be Bishop’s second opponent from Bakersfield. The Cardinals defeated Garces Memorial, 30-14, in a Week 2 game at La Playa Stadium.
In the recent rankings by MaxPreps, Liberty is ranked second behind Garces in Bakersfield and sixth in the Central Section.
Liberty (3-1) is coming off its first loss, a 14-13 decision against Clayton Valley Charter in a Honor Bowl game. Clayton Valley Charter is the No. 4 team in Division 1 of the North Coast Section.
Liberty dominated its other opponents, beating Spanish Springs of Nevada (28-3), Bakersfield Ridgeview (51-0) and Stellar Prep of Hayward (56-0).
Junior running back Jalen Hankins leads the Eagles with 344 yards rushing on 46 carries and seven touchdowns. Senior quarterback Carson Woods has passed for 441 yards and six TDs. They operate behind a big offensive line.
Aaron Skinner, Bishop Diego’s athletic director and assistant football coach, reported Thursday that quarterback Michael Luckhurst will be in the lineup on Saturday night. He was shaken up in the 51-3 win at Redondo Union last Friday.
