African Union seeks ceasefire in Ethiopia Ethiopian troops and refugees are reportedly fleeing the fighting in the northern Tigray region and have crossed the border into Sudan.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said the military would bring an end to the fighting in Tigray region and remove its leadership, which his government regards as illegal.
Last week, Ahmed ordered the military to respond to an attack on an army camp in the regional capital of Mekele by the Tigray People's Liberation Front, known as the TPLF.
At the same time, the Ethiopian government declared a state of emergency in the Tigray district. Ahmed cited months of ‘provocation and incitement’ and insisted a red line had been crossed.
Meanwhile, the African Union Commission chairman, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has called for the “immediate cessation of hostilities.”
On Saturday, the Catholic Bishops of Ethiopia appealed for peaceful dialogue, urging parties to resolve their differences amicably, in a spirit of respect and understanding.
