Applicants sought for Area 1 seat on board
The Fallbrook Union High School District is accepting applications to fill a school board vacancy for Trustee Area 1. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, registered voters, residents of the school district, and not be legally disqualified from holding public office. Applications are available at fuhsd.net and will be accepted from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the district office, 2234 S. Stage Coach Lane, until 4 p.m. Feb. 7. The school board is expected to fill the vacancy at a special meeting at 4 p.m. Feb. 13. Don Diego scholarship applications open
The Don Diego Scholarship Foundation announces it will offer $65,500 in 2023 college scholarships to exceptional students who live in the San Diego area. Eligible students will also have participated in the San Diego County Fair and/or other activities associated with the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Scholarships are offered in six categories. Student named Regeneron finalist
Ellen Xu, a student at Del Norte High School, has been chosen as a finalist by the Society for Science and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. She is one of 40 finalists in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2023, a prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. The 2023 finalists were selected from 1,949 entrants based on the originality and creativity of their scientific research, as well as their achievement and leadership in and out of the classroom. Each finalist is awarded at least $25,000, and the top 10 awards range from $40,000 to $250,000. Xu will now participate in a weeklong competition in March. Students will compete for more than $1.8 million in awards, and will also interact with leading scientists and share their research at a virtual event. The top 10 Regeneron Science Talent Search 2023 winners will be announced March 14. Xu was one of 300 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholars named earlier this month, and one of several from San Diego County. The Regeneron Scholars each received $2,000 and $2,000 for their schools. Students receive full-ride scholarships
Two students in the San Marcos Unified School District recently received full Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarships from the U.S. Marine Corps. Mission Hills High School student Cadence Yeats was surprised on campus with the $180,000 NROTC scholarship and plans to attend the University of California San Diego. San Marcos High School student Fiona Burns also received a $180,000 NROTC scholarship. Burns plans to attend the University of Colorado at Boulder. The NROTC allows aspiring Marine officers the opportunity to complete their studies at a participating college or university and earn a commission in the U.S. Marine Corps.
SOLANA BEACH
Robotics team advances to regionals
Team Berrybotics in the Solana Beach School District recently won first place in robot performance, as well as the champion award, advancing them to the regional level of the FIRST Lego League competition. Members of the team of sixth-graders are Siddharth Goel, Lihito Ikedo, Silas Rostami, Sanjana Nambiar and Sanmayu Nandipati, students at either Solana Pacific or Solana Ranch. BerryBotics was tasked to build and program a Lego robot to complete a unique set of missions, as well as tackle a real-world problem and present a solution. This year’s topic was energy, and under the coaching of Canyon Crest Academy student Shrey Goel, Team BerryBotics created a solution to make tidal energy more environmentally safe.
VISTA
Irrigation District offers scholarships
The Vista Irrigation District invites local high school seniors to compete for scholarships. Up to six scholarships may be awarded in amounts from $1,000 to $3,000. The scholarship program aims to increase knowledge and awareness of how water-related issues influence our daily activities. Applicants must complete an essay and provide a one page personal statement related to their background and/or goals. Selection criteria also include community involvement or volunteer service, and letters of recommendation from high school faculty. Applicants can download a fillable PDF application package at bit.ly/3XDlCE3 or contact Brent Reyes at (760) 597-3107 to have the materials sent to them. Applications are also available through high school counseling offices. Deadline is 5 p.m. Feb. 24. Eligible students must live or attend school within the Vista Irrigation District service area.
