FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – On March 6, His Grace Bishop Sevastianos of Zelon was the keynote speaker at the Celebration of Learning at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Fort Lauderdale. This biennial event supports scholarships for children of the St. Demetrios community to attend religious summer programs like St. Stephen’s Camp, and to encourage higher education. The St. Demetrios Scholarship Committee has awarded scholarships to 40 children in the past six years.
Fr. Peter Zougras, Proistamenos (presiding priest) of St. Demetrios, welcomed His Grace who presided over the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy. The Bishop’s presentation was inspirational as he focused on the legacy of the Three Hierarchs and the value of their teachings.
The event included a catered lunch and a beautiful musical presentation by Cyprus New York Productions. The concert, entitled Believe, included classical and contemporary selections. The musicians, soprano Ariadne Anna, tenor Demetris Michael, and Artistic & Musical Director Phyto Stratis are originally from Cyprus and have performed at ecumenical events in New York and Atlanta.
