AAUW invites students to speech competition
The American Association of University Women Del Mar-Leucadia Branch invites all local high school students to compete in Speech Trek, a contest sponsored by AAUW of California. Contestants create a five- to six-minute speech on the topic: “Has the United States lived up to its pledge of ‘liberty and justice for all’? Would requiring the study of diversity, equity and inclusion in a high school setting help ensure liberty and justice for all?” Deadline to apply is Feb. 7. Students will compete live virtually at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 17 via Zoom. Prizes are $500 for first place, $300 for second and $200 for third. The winner will move on to the state semifinals in April. Contact the AAUW Del Mar-Leucadia Branch at speechtrek@aauwdml.org to apply. The AAUW branch raises money for scholarships for local college students and for local middle school girls who are chosen to attend AAUW’s Tech Trek, a STEM camp held at UC San Diego. Petting zoo makes annual Grauer visit
The Grauer School recently helped its students get through December exams with an annual tradition: welcoming a mobile petting zoo on campus. “Cindy Lu’s Petting Zoo” came to visit, and students and teachers relaxed by interacting with baby goats, rabbits, chickens, ducks and even an alpaca. The mobile petting zoo is owned by school neighbor Cindy Brandenburg, who lives on a farm in Olivenhain with the animals. “We want our students to connect with nature and with animals, to swing on the swings and access their playful side, and to feel that childlike whimsy,” said Tricia Valeski, Grauer research director, in a statement. “The benefits are proven. How could we not offer that to our students?” Grauer’s campus is also home to chickens in a chicken coop, faculty dogs interacting with students, a school garden providing harvest-to-kitchen cooking experiences, nature trails running through the school’s native wildlife corridor, and a faculty nursery.
