Sustained each year by the blessing of the Pope and local Bishops, thousands around the world gather on Good Friday to follow Christ’s footsteps in the heart of their community, on the day of His Passion.
On Friday, the retracing of the path of Jesus’ footsteps, called The Way of the Cross, took place in Crosby. The Way of the Cross has been an event in Crosby for the past 10 years or so, organizers said. This year, the group processed on a 2-mile route throughout Crosby with about 125 people in attendance.

The founder of Communion and Liberation, Father Luigi Guisassani, started proposing this unique gesture (a cross walk) of the Christian faith to college students, gathering them by the thousands in Caraviggio, Italy, organizers said. To supplement the traditional readings from the Gospel, Father Giussani introduced short passages from some of the greatest contemporary Catholic writers and poets, like Charles Peguy, who help to express the contemporary reverberations of Christ’s historic death and resurrection in the world. Giussani also asked a choir accompany the procession, singing at every station to constantly reawaken the awareness of the faithful with the beauty and sorrow that only choral music can express.
“The Way of the Cross in the heart of a city where people carry their daily cross, most of the time dreadfully alone: if God exists, He has nothing to do with my daily life. This is the true cross of every day, the cross of a person abandoned only to himself in his innermost need for never-ending love, truth, beauty and justice,” organizers stated in a news release.
“We need the presence of “God with us,” Jesus every day. And Jesus, because of the sacrifice of His cross and because of His resurrection, dwells among us, every day. It is the very noise and confusion of our community where we spend our days. We will need to desire great attention in order to follow Jesus and to fix our gaze on the event of His passion … that very same attention that is intended to look at the event of His presence among us every day.”
Those taking part in The Way of the Cross maintain silence as a to recognize God’s presence in their daily lives.
