With a coronavirus vaccine on the cusp of being approved in the U.S., many Catholics are wondering about the ethics behind the vaccines being produced. Some of the many vaccines being developed, are produced unethically, from cell lines derived from abortions decades ago. Doctor Joseph Meany, president of the National Catholic Bioethics Center says it puts Catholics in a dilemma. Dr. Meany says besides confirmatory testing, the Pfizer vaccine did not rely on abortion derived cell lines in its production. “It would be better to take a vaccine that has less to do with abortion derived cell lines than one that is completely immersed in them.” But, as more vaccines come out, Catholics may have a hierarchy of options.
