Suwitsa is a Thai woman in her early 30s and the proud mother of a four-year-old daughter, on whom she visibly dotes. The little girl is her mother’s first child, but she could have had an older sibling.
Years ago when Suwitsa accidentally became pregnant, she decided to have an abortion, which she got done at a backstreet clinic for a few thousand baht.
“I wasn’t yet married and I didn’t have much money, so I didn’t want to have a child,” says Suwitsa, who runs a small business in Bangkok. “My boyfriend at the time also pushed me to do it,” she adds, sounding apologetic.
Abortion has long been illegal in Thailand, although women can still have them done illegally at clinics where doctors agree to perform the procedure. Now this state of affairs is expected to change.
