Pro-life groups are rallying against a fast-tracked bill in the UK Parliament that would legalise doctor-assisted suicide.
Cardinal Vincent Nichols of Westminster, leader of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, criticised the government for rushing the legislation through, calling it “deeply irresponsible” and warning that it could have lasting, harmful consequences.
His comments 4 February follow growing concerns from pro-life groups, like Care Not Killing and Right To Life UK, who argue that the bill lacks proper debate and safeguards.
The bill, which passed its first vote in November, would allow adults with terminal illnesses to seek life-ending assistance under strict conditions.
Critics, including Lord David Alton, warn that the law could disproportionately affect disabled or vulnerable individuals and set a dangerous precedent.
The bill is still under review by a parliamentary committee, with a key vote scheduled for 25 April. Pro-life groups are urging members of Parliament to listen to their constituents and oppose the measure.
